Thanks to my east coast Tweepies, I was able to find out in advance that Rick Astley was going to be performing in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. I normally do not watch the parade but turned on my TV once I saw the tweets. Plus, after visiting New York for the first time this past March, it was cool to see a location that I had been. Anyways, this is what I waiting for:
This just proved that the Internet has a huge effect on the types of topics/people/etc., that TV media is looking for to gather audiences.
Rick Astley video had great coverage back in March 2007 when it was claimed to be mirrored in 4chan’s site for the Grand Theft Auto IV trailer video, but the video did not really become a Internet phenomenon until March 2008. The joke, prank, whatever you want to call it, hit the Internet stream and the term Rick Rolled was world known . The term Rick Rolled is something similar to a”bait and switch.” People searching the web come to web link they claim is relevant to the topic at hand, but the link actually takes the user to the Astley video.
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade was “Rick Rolled”. Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!!
