I have always been a huge fan of Sesame Street since I can remember. As a child, this was probably one of the only times my mom would sit us in front of the TV.
I got my son into the tradition of watching Sesame Street when he was younger. My son was a big fan of Elmo during the craze of “Tickle Me Elmo .” Sesame Street has been around for 40 years for a reason, to educate not only the young but also the parents on so many different aspects of life. Focuses include, Diversity, Health & Wellness, Respect & Understanding, Literacy & Numbers and lets not forget Emotional Wellbeing.
Each character on the show has their own personalities and talents that
they teach. Some of my favorites are, The Count, who teaches about numbers and how to count, Grover who is a daydreamer and teaches that anything is possible if you believe, Snuffaluffagus teaches how to be a great friend, while Oscar the Grouch can be analyzed in different ways depending on the analyzer. Many may see Oscar as a negative and messy muppet, who is miserable and tries to bring everyone down with him. Negativity is a real trait in human life, Oscar’s character brings awareness to the young, that people with this attitude really exist and you cannot let them get you down. I on the other hand see Oscar as promoting self happiness, you don’ need to fit in to be happy. Oscar is happy in his own realm and doesnt need anyone else to understand.
Many celebrites have guest starred on Sesame Street to bring awareness to different events going on in the world. I remember there was a September 11th episode to bring understanding to the younger groups on what occurred. My son was only 5 months old at the time the attacks occurred, but I thought it was a great episode to educate children about the event. Another education push is Special Education; for people with mental and physical disabilities. My sister is autistic and has cerebral palsy and I have always loved the fact that they try and educate the young about disabled people.
I hope Sesame Street sticks around many many more years as a resource to help educate our future generations on the different aspects of life!
