My daughter was really excited on buying a book at her school book fair. I told her to buy a chapter book so that she can read it. My daughter has just recently got into Junie B. Jones books. I hyped up the idea to my daughter of getting more Junie B. Jones chapter books so that she can start a collection. My daughter likes collecting things so I figured I would sell the idea to something of her liking. I specifically told her not to buy any nick nacks or books that only have pictures.
Why does my daughter come home with a recipe book? A High School Musical recipe book to be exact. I guess she figured it is a book she can read. I asked her why she did not follow directions and she told me, “I thought of you mommy, it can help you think of more ideas for dinner.” I guess she is trying to sell me on her reasoning like I tried to with my reasoning to her. I just love parenthood, never a dull moment!
It is great that schools have book fair for kids to become more involved in reading. Although, I feel schools should restrict the type of books they sell at their book fairs, to education “reading” books. I don’t recall seeing a recipe book in my school library when I was in elementary school, so why promote it? My daughter is 6 years old and of course is going to be more attracted to a book of her likely rather then one that she should be reading. I guess it is back to the drawing board for me on my approach to the importance of reading!!!!
